of Charlotte-area activists, concerned about the "war on
terrorism" and restrictions on civil liberties.

CALENDAR
Henderson Hill, Susan Burgess,
Dwayne Walker, Dwayne Collins, and Ross Overby to speak at the 7th
Annual Charlotte Social Justice Conference!
Mark
your calendars for the morning of Saturday, April 5, 2008, 10 am to
1 pm in the Francis Room at the Main Library, 310 North Tryon Street,
Charlotte, NC 28202.
The topic of this year's Social Justice
Conference is:
"Promoting Justice in the New and Growing Multiethnic Charlotte."
Ahmad Daniels, Creative Interchange,
will be panel moderator.
We'll try to find answers to these questions:
1. How can we claim justice when some
minorities: feel unfairly racially profiled, and Latinos feel targeted
for possible deportation as undocumented immigrants?
2. Why do the police approach undocumented immigrants
different from the sheriff's department and which is best for the
community?
3. Why is the white majority surprised when a black
sheriff is properly elected by state approved process?
4. Do the local news organizations accurately reflect
strong public opinion sentiments of all community members?
On the day after the 40th anniversary
of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the
focus will be on the status of justice today in our society.

PROGRESSIVE NEWS from Diane Frederick dfrederick@carolina.rr.com
Financial market turmoil raises worries
No less an authority than former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan
wrote recently that "the current financial crisis in the U.S.
is likely to be judged as the most wrenching" since the end of
World War II. Other noted economists are also sounding alarms. Harvard
professor Martin Feldstein, the former head of the National Bureau
of Economic Research, said recently he believes the country is now
in a recession and it could be a severe one.
